Capricorn Australian Shepherds - Breeding & Puppies
Our Litters
We occasionally have puppies available to interested parties, but our litters are few and far between. We are usually so busy competing with our dogs that we can't afford to take one of our girls out of commission for six months to raise a litter! Our current schedule allows us a litter once every three years or so, so please don't call up and expect us to have 8-week-old puppies on the ground and ready to go home with you...we just aren't THAT kind of breeder. (actually, is that a breeder, or a puppy mill??)

We have no litters planned at this time.

We are currently members of several dog organizations, but the local Aussie club we belong to is the Australian Shepherd Club of Arizona. If you are looking for a puppy, and we don't have a litter due (which we likely won't), you can e-mail us and we'll get back to you with any litters we happen to hear about through our club connections (we are rather selective about the litters we'll recommend to buyers, though!).

Our Puppies
When we do have litters, our puppies go home with guarantees on health, eyes, hips, and (on show puppies) disqualifying faults under the ASCA and AKC breed standards. You will have to endure an interview with us, at which time we will ask you questions about your home life and ability to care for a very high-energy, potentially destructive puppy. We aren't trying to be nosey, but we do try to be thorough to make sure we match the right buyer to the right puppy. Sometimes, the "right puppy" isn't a Capricorn puppy--some people are either unprepared for the level of commitment that comes with owning a Capricorn dog, or are unprepared for the commitment of a dog, period!

We welcome puppy buyers who are interested in getting started in dog shows, and will do everything we can to get them off to a successful start in their show career, from handling lessons, to grooming tips, to training guidance. If you have no interest in showing your Capricorn puppy, we may negotiate terms in your puppy contract that allow us to show your puppy a few times, if we think your puppy is going to be an outstanding show prospect. For the most part, our puppy buyers who have half-heartedly given shows a try have discovered that they are a whole lot of fun--we now have a "show family" of people who own Capricorn dogs, and we have a good time hanging out together at shows, training classes, and other times!

Our Studs
We currently have two males available at stud, but generally, we don't promote them for breeding to females outside our kennel. As the Stud Owner of a litter, we do not have any say in the choice of homes where the resulting puppies are placed, and as we are somewhat paranoid about the potential homes that our puppies go to, we prefer to to avoid the possibility that one of our own would wind up in a bad situation. If for some reason we do stand one of our boys at stud, we require bitch owners to have current eye and hip certifications, a brucellosis test, and we also require that she meet a number of other rather stringent standards for structure, temperament and genetic health...most back-yard breeders will find it is not worth their while to inquire after our boys. It isn't that we're trying to be snobbish, but rather, we take extreme care in the selection of breeding stock, and do not feel that breeding is a decision that should be entered into lightly.

Soap Box
We all think our own dogs are the best and most wonderful animals that have ever lived, but in fact, many Aussies have winning personalities, and that alone does not necessarily mean a dog should be chosen to reproduce. Please, if you are unwilling to spend the time, effort and money to ensure that the dogs you produce are free of genetic temperament and health problems, leave breeding to those of us who are, and content yourself with purchasing your next companion from a knowledgeble and responsible breeder.
